The sun was shining through the trees and a breeze was coming off the lake as 100 people gathered Sunday, September 4, 2005 for an outdoor worship service at Camp Merri-Mac in Black Mountain. As people meandered in, enjoying the beautiful mountains of WNC, they were met by the sounds of Brian and Kathleen Howell, joined by Jeff Whisenant, Jennifer Linville and Jesse Dement as they prepared for worship, their notes floating on the air to welcome those arriving.

Worship began around 10:00 a.m. The Holy Spirit’s presence was intently felt as Kathleen Howell sang a Psalm and it seemed as if nature joined us as we lifted our voices to worship God. After wonderful teaching from Pastor Gus and more worship, the entire group migrated to the picnic area where, thanks to Gus Schill, Dave Scales and Brian Ward and their roasting the pig all night, there was barbecue to go around. The tables were overflowing with goodies brought by attendees and we all had too much to eat -- especially desserts. People were scattered about in lawn chairs and on blankets sharing in good food and good fellowship. Eventually, after everyone got their fill, a few volleyball games erupted and the kids got to go swimming in the lake as others cast their lines trying to catch a fish or two.

All in all, the entire day was a tremendous success enjoyed by all. Special thanks to all who made this wonderful day of worship for our Grace Biltmore family possible, especially Tim Heffner who arrived at 5:30 a.m. to help finish the pig and set up the sound, Larry Hartley who went to the IWANNA building just to make sure no one would be left wondering where we were and to Michael Schill, Ryan Scales, David Schill and Zeke Ward for their willingness to help wherever and whenever they were needed. And to the entire Schill family who gave so willingly of themselves for our benefit. There are many more hands and hearts that went into this wonderful day and we sincerely thank you all.
